Dear Marija

Thank you so much for taking the time to drop us a line and to share your personal and family experience of migration! We are planning to film the seminar, so you should be able to download it!

It's great to know that there are good people like you working for our communities and as you say linking with other people is a powerful way in which to effect change.

I too migrated with my family as a young person, I think the term is the 1.5 generation! You might be pleased to know that the 1.5 generation are thought to have unique skills, bridge-builder/ cultural interpreter often helping parents and grandparents navigate their new life.

Warm regards from chilly Victoria!

Dear Tanja

Thanks for taking the time to ask some really important questions and propose some of the ways in which equity of outcomes might be achieved as well as the barriers and enablers/levers to achieving it!

You've also teased out the really important issues around identity/ies and advocacy and who can speak and for whom and when!

We are hoping that the seminar series provide opportunities for harnessing these ideas, strengthening networks in order to build more momentum.

Your comments are wonderful provocations and I hope you will join us Tanja!

Warm regards, Ruth

I live in Perth, would love to but unfortunately I can't attend this seminar. Subsequently, I would like to contribute to this discussion.
These issues I have been advocating here in WA, in my own way. Would appreciate linking with people to make our voices be heard everywhere.
I was 8 when I immigrated with my parents. I have a family member with a Mental Health
disorder and my father passed away in 2014 from dementia complications.

Thank you

For years advocates in the healthcare system have tried to effect “cultural change”, to embed responsiveness to diversity as a matter of course – we are still struggling. The stories of inappropriate care are still rife and inequality of access to healthcare still exists in this rich country.

Why is cultural responsiveness still seen as acquiring knowledge about the specific customs of certain cultural groups? Why is access to interpreters still sometimes difficult? Why are there still differences in health outcomes but no measurements to improve health outcomes for certain population groups? Part of the answers lie in the issue of advocacy, where immigrants themselves don't feel they have the right to change the system, second generation immigrants just want to fit in and "anglo" Australians don't feel that they have the street cred.
Advocacy in this area has yet to achieve the aim of an equitable health service system. We have to think differently about advocacy and develop new ideas and approaches to affect change in the service system. In particular through health economics, health literacy, workforce development and data analysis.
